Acid Pickling & Passivation

Acid Pickling is a chemical metal treatment process used to remove surface impurities, oxides, scale, and iron contamination from stainless steel parts. High-temperature processes like welding, heat treatment, and fabrication leave a depleted chromium layer on the metal surface. Acid pickling removes this compromised layer, exposing a fresh metal base.

Following pickling, Passivation is applied to accelerate the formulation of a passive chromium oxide film on the metal. This film is what makes stainless steel highly resistant to corrosion and chemical stains. At SSFM Buffing Work, we perform acid pickling using safe acid blends, followed by extensive quality testing like Litmus Paper pH balance checks and Ferrocyanide spray checks to verify results.

Process Standards

  • Degreasing: Complete removal of oils, lubricants, grease, and metallic particulates.
  • Acid Immersion/Spray: Managed chemical reaction utilizing hydrofluoric and nitric acid blends.
  • Neutralizing & Rinsing: Clean wash to restore neutral pH values.
  • Chemical Passivation: Promotion of chromium oxide self-healing protective barrier.
